Ms. Ho Koon Wei and Mr. Mutharasapan were invited to share their insights from the 2023 SDG National Partnership during a talk on March 19, 2023. The session allowed the Deaf community to learn about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their relevance to the community’s needs and aspirations.

Why Are the SDGs Important?
What Are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were established by the United Nations in 2015, comprising 17 goals that aim to address critical global challenges by 2030. These goals focus on a wide range of issues, including eradicating poverty, reducing inequalities, providing quality education, ensuring good health, promoting gender equality, and taking urgent action on climate change. The SDGs serve as a universal framework, encouraging nations, organisations, and communities to work together towards a more sustainable, equitable, and inclusive world.
Why the SDGs Matter for the Deaf Community
During the workshop, approximately 15 members of MyBIM participated in discussions that highlighted the importance of the SDGs for the Deaf community in Malaysia. Understanding the SDGs is crucial because they promote the idea that development should benefit everyone, including marginalized groups like the Deaf community. The principles of the SDGs align with the goals of the Deaf community, emphasising inclusivity, accessibility, and equal opportunities.
Building Partnerships for a Better Future
The workshop also explored potential collaborations with other communities and organisations on various sustainability projects. By working together on these initiatives, the Deaf community can amplify its voice and make significant contributions toward achieving the SDGs. It is through such partnerships that the goals of inclusivity and equal access can be fully realized, ultimately improving the quality of life for all members of society, including those in the Deaf community.
Moving Forward with SDG Initiatives
Following this workshop, MyBIM aims to continue building on the relationships and knowledge gained during the session. The commitment to supporting the SDGs will guide future efforts, ensuring that the Deaf community remains an active participant in Malaysia’s path toward sustainable development. These efforts not only promote the welfare of the Deaf community but also contribute to a more inclusive and just society for all.
